Baby Puppy Classes are designed to socialise and train puppies at the crucial stage of a dogs life - between 8 and 16 weeks. Anything a dog experiences in the first few months of its life will shape the puppy into the dog it will be for the rest of its life. During this time, a puppy is more likely to accept new experiences and be willing to explore new challenges. If the socialising the dog experiences during this time is fun, the puppy will become a happy, confident adult dog. However, if no socialising is done, or if the socialising is frightening or not fun, then the puppy may become a scared, unconfident adult dog which may lead to aggression. Therefore the more "good" socialising that is done with a puppy this early stage of its life will be of benefit to the dog and its owner for the rest of its life.
During our Baby Puppy Class we aim to:
- Socialise puppies and enable them to learn natural dogs behaviours and body languages;
- Teach the pup basic manners using a positive fun method. We teach puppies to sit; come; lie down; stay; leave it; wait for food and walk nicely on the lead;
- Help owners with problems they may be having with their puppy, such as toilet training, chewing, play biting, jumping up and digging;
- Teach owners about dog behaviour and body language;
- Teach dogs to accept and enjoy being handled for Vet checks and grooming;
- Discuss responsible pet ownership;
- Give new owners some information about health care by one of the Vets at Snowy Vet Clinic
Our puppy classes run as a 5 week course with the first week being a 1 ½ hour session without dogs so we can teach owners about our training and socialisation techniques. Each class runs for 1 hours. Puppies must be between 8 - 16 weeks of age when the class starts and bookings are essential as no more than 6 puppies are taken for a class
The cost for our 5 week Baby or Senior Puppy class is $140 which includes a clicker for training, treat bag and all training notes. Our Baby Puppy Classes are held at the Snowy Vets in Cooma on a Wednesday evening at 6:30pm and at the Snowy Vets in Jindabyne on a Tuesday evening at 6:30pm (Puppy Classes in Jindabyne are not held during winter from June - August). Please ensure you are able to attend all 5 sessions as refund are not given for missed classes (1 make up session per course can be organised in extenuating circumstances however this is only if there are times available). If you do not feel you can commit to a 5 week course then you may like to consider our drop in Junior Dogs classes instead as these are more flexible. BOOK NOW
PLEASE NOTE – Puppies must be up to date with their vaccinations for their age, however they do not need to have had all their puppy vaccinations. We hold our puppy classes at the Veterinary Clinic on a disinfectable surface therefore we are able to socialize puppies at the most important time in their life without the risk of them picking up something nasty. For more information on the importance of puppy socialisation please go to avsabonline.org/uploads/position_statements/puppy_socialization.pdf
During Winter (mid May to late August), our Jindabyne classes will not run, however we do offer a 4 week private (you and your pup learning in your home) lesson class to get you started on their puppy journey. This class is available for pups 8-14 weeks of age and can be BOOKED HERE. If they are fully vaccinated then they can join our Junior dog group classes which are for dogs over 15 weeks of age and are held in Jindabyne on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of the month at 3:30pm. Please go to our Junior Dogs page for more info on this.
